Type I – Very Fair Skin

•  Skin color: Very light (like redheads)

•  Always gets sunburn

•  Never gets tan

•  Very sensitive to sun

Type II – Fair Skin

•  Light skin

•  Burns easily in the sun

•  Tans only a little


Type III – Medium Skin

•  Medium wheatish skin (common in India)

•  Sometimes burns

•  Tans slowly

Type IV – Olive Skin

•  Indian brown skin (common skin tone in India)

•  Rarely burns

•  Tans easily and well


Type V – Brown Skin

•  Deeper brown tone

•  Hardly burns

•  Tans dark


Type VI – Dark Brown or Black Skin

•  Very dark skin (seen in some African, South Indian skin tones)

•  Never burns

•  Tans very dark

•  Needs special care for chemical peels to avoid marks

Darker skin types (Type IV, V, VI) need milder peels and more care to avoid side effects like pigmentation.
